| How long does it take to obtain a certificate? It takes 2 weeks for an online certificate request and 4 weeks for a mail-in request. It takes longer for requests that require an amendment. |
| What is the cost of a vital record? The Code of Virginia requires a cost of $12.00 per certificate/search. There is no refund if the certificate is not found. If no record is found for a birth certificate request, a “No Record” letter will be issued. An administration fee of $10.00 is charged for any change to a certificate. If you wish to receive a copy of the certificate once amended, the total cost will be $22.00. This includes the $12.00 certificate fee and the $10.00 administration fee. |
| How do I correct information or amend a Vital Records Certificate? Please call us at 804-662-6200 between (Office hours are 8:00am – 4:30pm M – F) or download and mail in your application and attach a note detailing the reason for the amendment. Click here for the online application. |
| Can I request an address change on a submitted application? If your request has been processed and the certificate was sent to the address that was listed on the application, you will need to submit a new application with payment. If your request has not been processed, you can submit a request to change your address. |
