Overview

This webinar  will explore the shifting landscape of the rapid diagnostic laboratory with the introduction of new technologies that provide antimicrobial stewards and infection preventionists with rapid identification of organisms and their susceptibilities to antimicrobials in hours versus days. This is changing how patients are screened for antimicrobial-resistant pathogens and increasing appropriate antimicrobial prescribing to enhance patient outcomes. This is the first webinar in a three-part series on the use of innovative diagnostics in antimicrobial stewardship.

Speakers

  • Romney Humphries, PhD: Director, Division of Laboratory Medicine, Vanderbilt University Medical Center
  • Ritu Banerjee, MD, PhD: Medical Director, Pediatric Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, Vanderbilt University Medical Center
  • Marnie Peterson, PharmD, PhD: Outreach Coordinator for the Antimicrobial Stewardship Project at CIDRAP will serve as moderator

Learning Objectives

After attending this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the connection between diagnostics and antimicrobial stewardship, especially in relation to decreasing the burden of drug-resistant infections.
  2. Interpret and apply diagnostic laboratory results to clinical practice.
  3. Explain the advantages and limitations of current and emerging diagnostic technologies used for antimicrobial stewardship.
