Attn: WIC Families – Formula Shortage Information

Updated April, 20th
Attention WIC Families - Information on Formula Recall

  • Similac Total Comfort 2 fl oz RTF and Spit-Up 2 fl oz RTF are no longer available.
      • SWO will reach out about requests for these products that are unable to be fulfilled to determine next steps.
  • Similac Advance powder availability should start increasing at WIC-approved stores very soon.
      • SWO has learned that less than 20% of Similac Advance powder in the WIC-approved can sizes has been impacted by the recall.
      • As stores process their inventory to remove any recalled products, they should start allowing the purchase of this product once again.
  • SWO has approved the first set of alternate formulas that participants can temporarily purchase at the store if they are unable to locate their prescribed formula.
      • Please see the handout that can be used for staff and participants.
      • These alternate product options do not require any updates to current food prescriptions or benefits for those participants currently issued recalled powder formulas.
      • We will continue to offer participants the option of concentrate (when available) but otherwise issue the powder version of Similac Advance, Sensitive, and Total Comfort as normal and let participants know about the temporary allowable substitutions.
      • The substitution formulas are all redeemed in the same way as regular contract formulas (ex. 1 can of Similac Advance will equal 1 can of any of the substitutes)
      • Substitutions for Spit-Up and Alimentum will require authorization from the HCP- additional information to come for these products.
  • Additional information related to formula changes and substitution options will be made available as soon as possible!
