RICHMOND, VA – Richmond and Henrico Health Districts (RHHD) celebrate the anniversary of the passage of the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act on August 18 by highlighting local program offerings. The CARE act, passed in 1990, improved the quality and availability of care and treatment for income-eligible people with HIV.
“We are honored to continue the legacy that Ryan White set for himself at such a young age,” said Richmond and Henrico Health Districts Community Health Educator Darcy Strayer. “Ryan White overcame discrimination, rallied to attend school, and became the public face of HIV/AIDS education in the United States. Our team hopes to show people that stigma and shame have no place in sexual health care, no matter your status.”
RHHD’s Ryan White team includes health educators who use their combined decades of HIV knowledge and passion for community care to help residents learn their HIV status. The team identifies individuals living with HIV through culturally astute, focused outreach and fact-based information, helping these individuals access medical care. The team also includes Referral for Healthcare & Support Services specialists that assess eligibility and connect newly diagnosed people and those lost to care to Ryan White services in the community. The Ryan White team supports medication access for people living with HIV. Taking these medications as prescribed is vital to keeping a person’s HIV viral load undetectable.
As part of its HIV and broader Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) prevention initiatives, RHHD offers clinic-based testing opportunities at its Cary Street, Henrico East, and Henrico West Clinics. Call (804) 205-3501 Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. to set up an appointment.
