Food safety isn’t just a buzzword, it is an essential part of our everyday life. Foodborne illnesses can affect anyone but with the right information and habits we can greatly reduce the risks. Food Safety Education Month serves as a reminder to protect ourselves and loved ones when it comes to the food we eat.
Follow the Four Steps to Food Safety: Clean, Separate, Cook, Chill
- Clean: Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. Also don’t forget to wash your cooking utensils.
- Separate: Avoid cross contaminating your food by keeping raw meat, poultry, seafood, and their juices away from other foods.
- Cook to the right temperature: Your food is safe to eat when it is cooked to the right internal temperature that is high enough to kill germs. Use a food thermometer to measure.
- Chill: Refrigerate your food properly. The Cold Food Storage Chart provides guidelines for storing food in the refrigerator and freezer.
