Skunk Tests Positive for Rabies in Sussex County

WAVERLY, Va. – On Sunday, November 13, a skunk that later tested positive for rabies was found deceased inside a kennel that housed a domestic dog. This incident occurred on Beaver Dam Road in Waverly. The Sussex Health Department and Sussex Animal Control continue to encourage animal owners to confirm that all pet vaccinations, especially rabies, are current. more>>

FINCASTLE, Va. – Health officials have confirmed the presence of rabies in the area of Breezekrest Lane in Fincastle, VA.  A skunk was confirmed positive for rabies by the Virginia Department of Health on 11/4/2022 in the area of the Breezekrest Lane in Fincastle, VA. Botetourt County Animal Control collected the skunk on 11/01/22. more>>

Virginia Department of Health Modifies Shellfish Harvesting Closures Effective midnight October 4, 2022

RICHMOND, Va.— The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is rescinding an earlier emergency shellfish closure order impacting the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay and west of and including the Virginia Inside Passage of the Eastern Shore due to tidal flooding and the remnants of a weather system from Hurricane Ian.  Instead, a new closure order has been issued which removes the Potomac tributaries, the Rappahannock River and its tributaries, the York River and its tributaries, and northern portions of the Bayside of the Eastern Shore based on updated weather forecasts. more>>

Monkeypox Vaccine Eligibility Expands; RHHD Makes Changes to Monkeypox Vaccination Effort

RICHMOND, VA- Today, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) updated monkeypox vaccine eligibility to include anyone living with HIV or AIDS and anyone who has been diagnosed with any sexually transmitted infection (STIs, formerly referred to as STDs) in the past three months. Richmond and Henrico Health Districts (RHHD) will welcome newly eligible individuals to express interest in a monkeypox vaccine starting on Monday, October 3, 2022. In the meantime, RHHD is preparing by simplifying its vaccine interest form and offering monkeypox vaccine appointments to the remaining eligible individuals on the list. more>>

RHHD Announces Second Round of Health Equity Fund Recipients

RICHMOND, VA- In October 2021, Richmond City Council voted to establish a first-ever Health Equity Fund (HEF) in the City of Richmond through an initial investment of $5 million from federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. Today, Richmond and Henrico Health Districts (RHHD) are announcing that $332,000 of this fund will be granted to community organizations to address health disparities. This is the second cohort of community-based projects funded through the HEF; an initial investment of $230,000 was made earlier this summer. more>>

WISE, Va. – The Lenowisco and Cumberland Plateau Health Districts will now offer a fourth vaccine choice for individuals in the community who are seeking a COVID-19 vaccine. RICHMOND, VA — After receiving a shipment of about 160 JYNNEOS monkeypox vaccines on July 19, 2022, Richmond and Henrico Health Districts (RHHD) is starting today to vaccinate individuals who may be at higher risk of monkeypox exposure who have not had contact with a known positive case. (Dinwiddie, VA)- A black and white skunk tested positive for rabies in Dinwiddie County. The skunk charged a female cat in the middle of the day on Saturday, July 9, 2022. The animal was located near  Dabney Mill Road, North Dinwiddie, VA 23803. Testing of Raccoon Confirms Rabies on Nansemond Drive

SUFFOLK, Va. — The Suffolk Health Department received confirmation today that a raccoon tested positive for rabies. In this case, the raccoon was in the back yard of a home in the 2600 block of Nansemond Drive on June 28, 2022. An unprovoked attacked took place to an outdoor pet. The Suffolk Health Department has canvased the neighborhood and spoken with several residents in the area who claim to have seen raccoons and foxes. Mosquito Samples Test Positive for West Nile Virus in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. –  The Norfolk Department of Public Health has detected the first West Nile Virus (WNV) activity of the season in the city of Norfolk. Two mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus. Both samples were collected in the Colonial Place neighborhood on June 30, 2022. NOTTOWAY, Va. –Potentially toxic cyanobacteria have formed a harmful algal “bloom” (HAB) in Lee Lake (Nottoway Lake) in Nottoway County just north of Blackstone. This type of blue-green algae may produce a toxin that can cause rashes and other illnesses. The Virginia Department of Health warns visitors to stay out of the water, and to keep their pets out, too. Rabid Raccoon Found in Sewells Gardens Neighborhood of Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. – A raccoon in Norfolk has tested positive for rabies. The sick raccoon was found along the 900 block of South Quail St in the Sewells Gardens neighborhood on January 11, 2022.  The raccoon subsequently died and was sent to the Virginia Department of Consolidated Laboratory Services in Richmond for testing. It was reported positive for rabies on January 13, 2022.
