Cat Tests Positive for Rabies in Hopewell

HOPEWELL, Va. – On September 10, a stray tabby cat (black, gray, brown) approximately 5 months old was found near a home on Stonewall Ave. in Hopewell. The cat bit someone and has since tested positive for rabies. Upon investigation, this is within a one-mile radius where a rabid fox was discovered on 8/8/24. The Environmental Health and Animal Control teams are canvassing the area where the animals were found. The Hopewell Health Department and Hopewell Animal Services encourage animal owners to confirm that all pet vaccinations are current and report any stray animals. more>>

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Rappahannock Area Health District (RAHD) and Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC) are excited to announce the launch of their joint 2025 Community Health Assessment (CHA) for Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties, and the City of Fredericksburg, as well as MWHC’s surrounding service areas. Swimming Advisories Lifted for All Ocean View Beaches in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk Department of Public Health has now lifted all five Swimming Advisories posted on Wednesday, September 4.   Re-sampling of the water at these locations has determined that levels of enterococci organisms are within State Water Quality Standards. All posted advisory signs are being removed from these locations. more>>

Swimming Advisories Issued for Ocean View Beaches

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk Department of Public Health has issued Swimming Advisories for five Ocean View Beaches: 5th Bay, North Community Beach, Ocean View Park, 10th View, and 13th View.  Water testing conducted yesterday revealed enterococci bacteria levels at these sites exceeding State Water Quality Standards. Signs have been posted to alert the public of these advisories. Health officials are retesting beach water and will remove posted signs and notify the public when the bacteria levels decrease to meet state standards. more>>

Rapidan Service Authority, Virginia Department of Health Issue  Do Not Use Water Advisory
Residents in the affected area should avoid all contact with the tap water

ORANGE COUNTY, Va. – On August 21, out of an abundance of caution and in coordination with the Virginia Department of Health, Rapidan Service Authority (RSA) issued a Do Not Use Water Advisory. The advisory was issued because RSA, the owner of the Wilderness water treatment plant (WTP), received complaints of an unknown odor. The waterworks serves the Lake of the Woods subdivision, Wilderness Shores, Somerset, Edgewood, Germanna Heights, Twin Lakes, Germanna Community College Locust Grove campus, two shopping centers with several restaurants on Route 3. more>>

Mosquito Sample Test Positive for West Nile Virus in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk Department of Public Health has detected the first West Nile Virus (WNV) activity of the season in the City of Norfolk. One mosquito sample has tested positive for West Nile virus. The sample was collected at the Cedar Grove Cemetery located at 238 East Princess Anne Road. The Division of Vector Control is conducting mosquito control operations in the adjacent area, including treatment of standing water. Fogging operations will be conducted when weather permits, as well as additional surveillance activities. more>>

Portsmouth Health Department Clinic Closure

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Due to first floor flooding caused by plumbing issues, the Portsmouth Health Department Clinic and Vital Records department, 1701 High St., Suite 102, Portsmouth will be closed on Friday, August 2. PETERSBURG, Va. — The Crater Health District (CHD localities Dinwiddie, Greensville, Prince George, Surry, Emporia, Hopewell, and Petersburg) has been recognized by the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) for its ability to plan for, respond to, and recover from public health emergencies. CHD demonstrated these capabilities by meeting the comprehensive preparedness benchmarks required by Project Public Health Ready (PPHR), a unique partnership between NACCHO and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CHD joins a cohort of more than 550 local health departments across the country that have been distinguished for excellence in preparedness through PPHR, either individually or as part of a region. more>>

Mount Rogers Health District Benefits From $1 Million Regional Partnership Grant

MARION, Va. Through a cooperative partnership, a grant totaling $1,131,318 has been awarded to Smyth County, VA, who will serve as the fiscal agent for the funds allocated by the Opioid Abatement Authority (OAA). Mount Rogers Health District, one of the sub-recipients, will use the funding to purchase a mobile health services unit. The application was submitted to the Opioid Abatement Authority (OAA) on behalf of the health district’s eight localities including Smyth, Wythe, Bland, Carroll, Grayson, and Washington counties, along with the cities of Bristol and Galax. Also included as part of the application was the partnership with the Highlands and Mount Rogers Community Service Boards. more>>

For the safety of people and pets, VDH is advising that recreational water activities, such as swimming, wading, tubing, and whitewater kayaking (where submersion in the water is likely), should be avoided. The advisory is issued out of an abundance of caution due to an ongoing sewage release from a City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities (COR DPU) sewer pipe. more>>

AMHERST COUNTY, Va. – Mill Creek Lake in Amherst County is experiencing a harmful algae bloom (HAB). The Virginia Department of Health is warning citizens to stay out of the water and to keep their pets and children out as well. The public is advised to avoid contact with the lake until algae concentrations return to acceptable levels. Some harmful algae, called cyanobacteria, can cause skin rash and gastrointestinal illnesses, such as upset stomach, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. more>>

Southwest Virginia Health Districts Conducting Long COVID Study

LYNCHBURG, Va. –  The Central Virginia Health District began a Long COVID surveillance project in October of 2023 that is now available to all residents of Southwest Virginia. Long COVID is when a person is still sick two or more months after getting COVID-19. Symptoms can include trouble breathing, a cough, feeling weak and tired, and problems with certain organs, such as the heart, brain, or lungs. A diagnosis of Long COVID is not required to participate. We want to learn about any long-term effects that people might have two or more months after a COVID-19 infection. more>>

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Arlington County Public Health Division (ACPHD) was notified of a confirmed case of measles in a person who visited a grocery store in Arlington while contagious.  VDH Issues Advisories for Recreational Water, Fish Consumption for Lick Creek in Wise and Russell Counties

ST. PAUL, Va. – The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is issuing a recreational water advisory for Lick Creek from the 628 bridge to the confluence with the Clinch River. For the safety of people and pets, VDH is advising that recreational water activities, such as swimming and wading, be avoided in this area of the waterway. Cat Tests Positive for Rabies in Dinwiddie County

DINWIDDIE, Va. – On June 15, a stray calico cat (brown, orange, and black with white spots) visited a home near Carolyn Drive in Sutherland, VA and scratched a victim.  Upon investigation, several neighbors along the rural road have also been identified as being scratched. In addition, it was discovered that the cat also had kittens. The cat has since tested positive for rabies.  The Dinwiddie Health Department and Dinwiddie Animal Control continue to encourage animal owners to confirm that all pet vaccinations, especially rabies, are current. more>>

STAUNTON, Va. Beginning June 18, the Central Shenandoah Health District will offer Test & Go clinics at the Harrisonburg Rockingham Health Department every third Tuesday of the month and are currently scheduled through to August of 2024. Test & Go clinics offer after-hours walk-in testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) once a month. Individuals can receive free testing for gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, hepatitis C, hepatitis B, and HIV at these clinics. Testing is available to everyone at no cost.
