What is the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) program?
The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a national network of volunteers who possess diverse backgrounds, training, and skillsets to augment public health emergency response efforts. MRC volunteers stand ready to support ongoing public health initiatives and health emergencies by contributing both medical and non-medical general support to improve and protect the health and safety of their communities.
What is the Lord Fairfax MRC (LFMRC) Unit?
The Lord Fairfax MRC Unit is a local MRC unit under the Virginia MRC (VA MRC) program that serves the localities of the Lord Fairfax Health District. LFMRC is part of LFHD’s Emergency Preparedness & Response (EP&R) division.
The mission of LFMRC is to promote healthy living, protect the environment, prevent disease, and prepare the community for disasters. The Lord Fairfax MRC Unit works to improve the overall health of the community through public health outreach and community engagement.
What do MRC volunteers do?
MRC volunteers provide reserve capacity to respond to local, state, and national public health needs. MRC volunteers deploy to support a wide range of public health-focused efforts and events, including but not limited to:
- Public health emergencies and disasters
- Public health emergency and disaster preparedness
- Daily public health activities
- Local health department support
- Health education
- Community outreach
- Trainings and exercises
- Leadership opportunities

- Community members 18 years or older, with or without medical training, who live and/or work in the localities of the Lord Fairfax Health District.
- No! Although ‘medical’ is in the name, you do not have to have a medical background to volunteer with the Medical Reserve Corps.
- The Lord Fairfax MRC Unit is comprised of both medical and non-medical general support volunteers with diverse professional backgrounds and skillsets.
- Yes! VA MRC volunteers receive the same risk management coverage as VDH employees when volunteering in both non-medical and medical capacities.
