LENOWISCO Vital Records

The term Vital Records refers to birth, death, marriage and divorce certificates. The LENOWISCO Health District can provide certified copies of vital records to individuals permitted by law to make such a request, daily Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 4:00PM except for state holidays. A Valid ID is required when obtaining ANY Vital Record. (Click Here to See ID Requirements). The next of kin or immediate family, which includes mother, father, husband, wife, child, brother, sister, with a valid ID, are eligible to request certified copies of the certificates. Newborn babies and children will not have an ID therefore the parent’s ID is required. For any questions or further information, visit or call your local health department:

Vital Records are available for the following dates:

  • Birth Certificates: (June 1912 – Present) – $12.00 each copy
  • Marriage Certificates: (1936 – Present) – $12.00 each copy
  • Divorce Certificates: (1918 – Present) – $12.00 each copy
  • Death Certificates: (June 1912 – Present) – $12.00 each copy

Search Fee: charged for any type of record not found – $12.00 per search


Virginia Death Certificates

Death certificates can be filed at and certified copies obtained from any local health department in the State of Virginia, regardless of where in Virginia the death occurred. However, if it has been less than 30 days since the initial filing of death, then you must obtain the death certificate from the city or county in which the death was originally filed.  The original death certificate is sent to the Division of Vital Records in Richmond with the copy remaining on file at the health department for a period of 3 years. Certified copies of death certificates may be obtained by persons authorized to receive a copy by completing an application and paying a processing fee of $12.00 per copy.

Virginia Birth, Marriage and Divorce Certificates

You can easily obtain certified copies of birth, marriage and divorce certificates from the LENOWISCO Health Department as long as these events occurred in Virginia.  Certified copies of birth certificates are also available by mail, by VITALCHEK system and by walk-in requests to the Division of Vital Records.

You may also easily obtain local marriage licenses that occurred in Virginia from the Wise County Clerk’s Office, Lee County Clerk’s Office, or the Scott County Clerk’s Office.  The Wise County Court House also maintains records for the City of Norton.


Fees

The fee for a vital record is $12.00 for each certificate, copy and/or search of a vital record.  Cash, check, money orders, VISA or Mastercard are accepted.  Please contact your local health department for more information.
