VIRGINIA ANNUAL IMMUNIZATION SURVEY (VAIS)

Purpose of Survey

The Virginia Department of Health conducts a retrospective survey annually of children in daycare facilities, head start programs, kindergartens and 7th grades to measure compliance with school-required vaccinations. Immunization records collected from enrollees are analyzed by VDH to assess age-appropriate immunization status at specific ages. Data from the individual sites are combined into respective categories to determine statewide immunization rates.

Kindergarten data are reported annually to the CDC. Click here, http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/imz-managers/coverage/schoolvaxview/index.html, to see how kindergarten immunization rates in Virginia compare to other states using the SchoolVaxView tool.

Methods of Survey

All students enrolled in Virginia public and private daycare centers, head start programs, kindergartens, and seventh grades are candidates for assessment. Using a Vaccination Assessment Sample Form provided by VDH, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) uses an advanced Excel software program to select the sites for assessment. Additionally, the Comprehensive Clinic Assessment Software Application (CoCASA) is used to determine immunization rates for vaccine single antigens and series completion at 24 months of age and as of the 1st day of school for both kindergartens and 7th grades. All data are handled confidentially.

Virginia allows only medical and religious exemptions.
