The division is dedicated to crafting initiatives and forging alliances aimed at empowering racial and ethnic minority communities to raise awareness about disparities in health. Its overarching goal is to effect enduring change in the underlying conditions that contribute to differential health outcomes, a strategy envisioned to surpass the impact of conventional interventions over time.
Within the Division of Multicultural Health and Community Engagement, collaboration with stakeholders is emphasized to pinpoint strategies for eliminating health disparities. This involves a concentrated effort on addressing social determinants of health, recognized as fundamental in eliminating inequities stemming from socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, geographic location, gender, immigrant status, and other social categorizations.
Accompanying this commitment is a demographic breakdown illustrating Virginia's population by race and ethnicity, as reported by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2014.
The five racial and ethnic minority populations recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau within Virginia are:
- African American/Black
- Hispanic/Latino
- Asian-American
- Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander
- American Indian and Alaskan Native
