Boater Education Program

In order to encourage boaters to dispose of sewage properly, VDH partners with Hampton Roads Sanitation District  to conduct outreach in the Hampton Roads area. VDH also partners with Smith Mountain Lake Association to conduct outreach in the Smith Mountain Lake area. Virginia Beach and Norfolk also contribute to the Hampton Roads Boater Education and Pump-out Program. Summer interns are hired in both regions to visit marinas and offer free pump-out services to boaters. The interns pass out literature that stresses the importance of disposing boat sewage properly. In addition to the handouts, the interns will also empty the contents of the sewage holding tanks at no charge.

The months of February, March, and April afford the opportunity to reach hundreds of boaters and marina operators by participating in regional boat shows. VDH personnel are available to answer any questions boaters may have regarding the proper disposal of vessel sewage and any inquiries about the states regulations concerning onshore sanitary facilities at marinas. VDH also provides updated lists of pump-out and dump station facilities throughout the state on these occasions.
