Education Coordinator Recertification Process
The recertification process for certified Education Coordinators (EC) begins with the EC completing their regulatory requirements for recertification--12VAC5-31-1552. EMS education coordinator recertification process--which are all completed through the Virginia EMS Portal:
- The EC must:
- Recording of teaching hours
- Attendance at an EC Update
- Passing the EC Recertification Quiz
- Requesting an EMS Physician Recommendation
- EMS Physicians are then notified of the need to agree or disagree with the EMS Physician Recommendation request through the Virginia EMS Portal.
- Once the EMS Physician confirms the recommendation from their portal, the recommendation status and expiration date will be populated for the you to see.
- The recommendation is valid for 180 days before it must be requested again, therefore it is important to not make this request too early.
- Recertification requests that meet all the criteria above are processed once a month during the EC's assigned expiration month.
- If the EC would like to recertify early, they will make a request through the Virginia EMS Portal to be recertified immediately.
- The "immediate" recertification will process in real-time and will change the EC's certification expiration month to the one in which the request is made.
- e.g. If an EC expires on August 31, XXXX, and they request immediate recertification in March, their new certification expiration date will be March 31, XXXX+3.
If recertification is not completed by the EC's expiration date, they will automatically enter a two-year reentry period. See 12VAC5-31-1553. EMS education coordinator reentry below.
