People With HIV

*All data is analyzed annually, and while some values may adjust over time, the dashboard is updated every year to add the prior year's data.

People with HIV/AIDS: Counts

  • If untreated, people with HIV may develop acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) over time.
  • In 2021, 2022, and 2023 there are more people with HIV than people with AIDS.  Due to advancements in treatment and care for People with HIV (PWH) fewer people advance to AIDS.
  • Consistent with the national epidemic, men (based on sex at birth) have higher rates of HIV and AIDS. Rates are helpful to compare disease occurrence across populations of different sizes and are calculated per 100,000 people.

Demographics of People with HIV/AIDS

  • Black, non-Hispanic populations have the highest counts of HIV/AIDS followed by White, non-Hispanic people.
  • Male-to-male sexual contact (MSM) is the most commonly reported transmission risk for people with HIV.
  • The highest burden of AIDS in Virginia is with people aged 50 and older.  There are likely several reasons for this including that many older adults were diagnosed in their younger years; older adults are less likely to get tested; and symptoms are easier to miss when paired with normal signs of aging or in the presence of other conditions, which could lead to a later diagnosis.

Distribution by Race and Region

  • All population-based data is compared with the 2023 Virginia population data.
  • While there are more White, non-Hispanic people in Virginia, more people who are Black/African American, non-Hispanic race/ethnicity have HIV.

People with HIV/AIDS Demographics Breakdown

  • Consistent with the national epidemic, men (based on sex at birth) are disproportionately impacted by HIV across all five regions in Virginia.

  • Among reported risk in Virginia, male-to-male sexual contact (MSM) is the most commonly reported transmission risk.

  • Heterosexual sexual contact is more commonly reported by females than males and is the most common transmission risk for females across all race/ethnicities.

Maps by Health District

  • Two maps are presented in this tab. The first map shows the rate of people with HIV (number of cases per 100,000 people) based on the health district.  Health districts are groups of cities and counties.  The second map shows the rate at the locality level, (individual cities and counties).
  • Lower rates are shown in lighter shades and higher rates in darker shades.  Rates are per 100,000 people in a defined area and help to compare the burden of HIV across different population sizes.
