Data Resources

VDH Data Portal
This data portal was developed to provide a convenient access point for health-related data for Virginia. This portal is a comprehensive source for community health assessment, public, and population health data. Each data portal page provides interactive data at the most granular level available. If you have any questions or data requests please contact: population.health@vdh.virginia.gov.

Respiratory Illness Activity
Respiratory illness activity tracks the number of visits to the emergency department for viral illnesses such as COVID-19, flu, and RSV and other respiratory illnesses such as cough and pneumonia.

Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)
BRFSS is the world’s largest, on-going telephone health survey system, tracking health conditions and risk behaviors in the United States yearly since 1984. The primary focus of these surveys has been on behaviors and conditions that are linked with the leading causes of death—heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and injury—and other important health issues.

Virginia BRFSS
The BRFSS is the primary source of information for states and the nation on the health-related behaviors of adults. The Virginia BRFSS, also known as the Virginia Adult Health Survey (VAHS), is a telephone survey conducted by VDH.

Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS)
The YRBSS was developed in 1990 to monitor priority health risk behaviors that contribute markedly to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth and adults in the United States.

Virginia Youth Survey (VYS)
The VYS is the Virginia specific version of the national YRBSS. It has been developed to monitor priority health risk behaviors that contribute markedly to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth and adults within the Commonwealth of Virginia. The survey is administered every odd year in randomly selected Virginia public schools.

County Health Rankings
The County Health Rankings rank the health of nearly every county in the nation and show that much of what affects health occurs outside of the doctor’s office.  The County Health Rankings illustrate the critical role that factors such as education, jobs, income, and environment play in how healthy people are and how long they live.
