VDH’s Crater Health District is a system of seven health departments in south central Virginia. The district begins 23 miles south of Richmond and extends south to the North Carolina state border. With more than 160,000 people with varying health needs living in our district, we work to build resilient communities throughout the cities of Petersburg, Hopewell, and Emporia, as well as the counties of Greensville, Surry, Sussex Dinwiddie, and Prince George. The Crater Health District is a state-city/county cooperative health service agency. We have over 100 full-time employees, 10 part-time employees, and countless volunteers each year. The Health District operates seven local health departments in Dinwiddie, Emporia, Hopewell, Petersburg, Prince George, Surry, and Sussex.
