Emergency department (ED) and urgent care (UC) visit data are one of the fastest ways to spot changing trends in respiratory illness transmission. This dashboard shows visits with diagnosed COVID-19, flu, and RSV.
Use the filters to view data by health region or health district. You can also click buttons to see visit counts or percentages, select facility type, and change the time period shown.
Source: Emergency Department (ED) and urgent care (UC) visits from Virginia’s syndromic surveillance system, ESSENCE (Electronic Surveillance System for the Early Notification of Community-based Epidemics).
VDH collects and analyzes health data from participating EDs and UCs in Virginia. All non-federal acute care hospitals and free-standing emergency care centers report ED visit data to VDH. Urgent care reporting varies throughout the state. Data are for clinical care of patients in healthcare settings. Public health surveillance is a secondary use. When interpreting trends, please consider syndromic surveillance data limitations.
Case Definitions: The data are the weekly count and percentage of ED and UC visits with diagnosed COVID-19, flu, or RSV in Virginia. Visits are categorized based on the discharge diagnosis. The discharge diagnosis codes used to identify ED and UC visits with COVID-19, flu, and RSV are included in this companion guide developed by the CDC.
Geography: VDH assigns region and health district using the patient’s residential zip code. The dashboard includes ED and urgent care visit data at Virginia facilities among Virginia and out-of-state residents. Use the VDH Health District Reference Guide for a list of cities and counties in each region and health district.
Protecting Confidentiality: At the health district level, diagnosed COVID-19, Influenza, and RSV visit counts of 1 to 4 and rates with numerators of 1 to 4 are not shown to maintain confidentiality. These counts/rates are indicated with an asterisk (*).
