Epidemiology

The Central Virginia Health District’s Department of Epidemiology conducts surveillance of reportable conditions, emerging infectious diseases and suspected outbreaks of illness. Staff provide recommendations and guidance on disease investigations and ensure actions are taken to prevent the spread of communicable disease in the Commonwealth. Coverage is maintained 24/7 to provide easy access to our Health Care colleagues and community partner

Our Epidemiology Team is focused on follow-up for reportable diseases, which plays a crucial role in public health by investigating and managing the spread of infectious diseases. Their primary responsibilities include:

  1. Case Investigation: Conduct thorough investigations of reportable disease cases to identify the source of exposure and provide disease control education to prevent further spread of the illness. This involves collecting and analyzing data from patients, healthcare providers, and other relevant sources to trace the origins and pathways of infections.
  2. Exposure Assessment: Evaluate potential exposure sources and transmission routes, such as environmental factors, food, water, or contact with infected individuals. This includes interviewing patients, reviewing medical records, and assessing environmental conditions.
  3. Disease Transmission Education: Develop and disseminate educational materials and guidelines to the public, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders on disease transmission, prevention strategies, and hygiene practices. This aims to raise awareness and promote behaviors that reduce the risk of spreading illness.
  4. Reporting and Documentation: Maintain detailed and accurate records of investigations, findings, and public health interventions. Prepare reports and presentations to communicate results and recommendations as needed.
  5. Surveillance and Monitoring: Continuously monitor trends in disease incidence and patterns to identify potential outbreaks or emerging threats. Use surveillance data to inform and refine public health strategies and responses.

Overall, the Epidemiologist's role is integral to understanding disease dynamics, preventing illness, and protecting community health through meticulous investigation, education, and proactive measures.
