Applying for Health Department Swimming Pool Plan Review
Plan reviews are only required to be conducted for public pools that are associated with a tourist lodging facility including hotels, Bed and Breakfast operations, Summer Camps and Campgrounds. Pool plan reviews are designed to address the basic operation and maintenance aspects of the swimming pool. (Virginia Administrative Code, 12VAC5-460).
Prior to construction, remodeling, or major alteration of a swimming pool as part of a Tourist Establishment operation, permit holders must submit a Swimming Pool Plan Review Application to the local Environmental Health Office where the tourist establishment pool will be located. Per the Virginia Administrative Code, 12VAC5-460-30, the plan review application submittal must include the following:
- Plans for the pump and recirculation system.
- Plans for the operation and maintenance of the pool disinfection and filtration system, including plans for the filtration room.
- The proposed source and location of the pool water supply and the proposed method and location of all wastewater disposal systems.
- The name and mailing address of the person operating the pool and the physical address of the pool.
Plan review approval, denial, or request for additional information
For plan review items that may overlap the scope of the building official, the Local Health Department will review plans for the presence of operational design features as required in the regulations to:
- Become familiar with the pool design and how this design will impact operation and maintenance, and
- Identify items that warrant additional discussion with the designer or operator to ensure proper operation and maintenance (O&M) and adequate disinfection.
