October 5th is World Meningitis Day! This day was started in 2008 by those who were affected by meningitis. It has evolved to become a global movement that aims to raise awareness of meningitis, its signs and symptoms, and available vaccines that can help prevent this deadly condition.
Meningitis is a swelling of the membranes that protect the brain and spinal cord. It can lead to death in under 24 hours or cause lifelong impairment. Meningitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, some medications, and brain tumors. Common symptoms include fever, headache, neck stiffness, and sensitivity to light. Meningitis can affect anyone, but children under the age of five years, adolescents and young adults, and people with suppressed immune systems are at higher risk of being affected.
Meningitis continues to be a significant global public health issue impacting up to five million people worldwide each year, resulting in approximately 230,000 deaths. In Virginia, an ongoing meningococcal disease outbreak has led to an increase in cases of meningitis across the state. Nationally, cases of meningococcal disease have increased sharply since 2021 and now exceed pre-pandemic levels. You can take simple steps to protect yourself and your family:
- Be aware of meningitis signs and symptoms.
- Seek medical evaluation as soon as possible if you experience meningitis symptoms to ensure rapid testing and treatment.
- Vaccines are available to prevent some types of meningitis. Speak with a healthcare provider to make sure you are up to date on routine vaccinations.
