VDH Bringing Attention to World Lung Cancer Day

Last Updated: August 15, 2024

Since August 1, 2012, several organizations that serve as a resource for cancer and cancer patients have observed World Lung Cancer Day to raise awareness about lung cancer. This year’s observance focuses on the power of unity, in the fight against lung cancer. The observance is also designed to remind people that early screening can save lives.

If you are a smoker or have a history of smoking, screening is recommended. Individuals with lung cancer don’t have symptoms associated with lung cancer before they are diagnosed. According to the National Cancer Institute, the earlier that lung cancer is caught, the better chance of survival.

While smoking is considered one of the major factors that causes lung cancer, there are many other causes.

  • Exposure to second-hand smoke
  • Exposure to unsafe levels of radon gas
  • Exposure to asbestos
  • Exposure to other cancer-causing agents
  • Air quality
  • Family history

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) offers programs to help Virginians concerned about their lung health. Quit Now Virginia is a comprehensive program that provides services to help Virginians who are experiencing tobacco and nicotine addiction.

VDH also provides support for individuals seeking help related to radon gas. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Testing your home for radon is the only way to know if there are high levels of radon in your home. The VDH Indoor Radon Program offers radon testing kits at reduced costs as supplies are available.
