World Breastfeeding Week 2024 – Bringing Attention to Breastfeeding Support

The first week of August marks the observance of breastfeeding awareness. This year’s theme is Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All. The observance, which runs from August 1-August 7, brings attention to the importance of breastfeeding and how families, communities and healthcare providers can support the breastfeeding journey. Key strategies include:

  • Breastfeeding counseling during pregnancy
  • Employer accommodations
  • Support for breastfeeding programs
  • Family encouragement
  • Breastfeeding normalization

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is actively involved with breastfeeding education and support for families. VDH encourages breastfeeding, when possible, because it offers many health advantages which can have long term benefits.

  • Breast milk is the infant’s first immunization.
  • It provides antibodies and immunities, which protect the infant from many chronic and acute illnesses.
  • Mothers who breastfeed can experience some protection from breast and ovarian cancer.

VDH supports statewide and national initiatives to promote breastfeeding, such as the Early Care Breastfeeding Friendly Recognition Program and the Virginia Maternity Center Breastfeeding Friendly Designation Program. VDH is actively involved with creating strong policies, services, programs and resources.

If you’re considering breastfeeding, talk with your healthcare provider. You can also visit the VDH breastfeeding resources and information webpage.
